Open Question: Pension money frozen in FNB
Hi all, I have a bit of a dilemma with South African Banks and will be grateful for any assistance in this regard. I left SA in 2009 to return to the UK after 35 years spent in SA. I am a permanent resident of SA and have the residence permit stamped in my passport. Last year (2013) in September I went to transfer money from my FNB Account in South Africa to a friends account in Standard Bank South Africa and the internet banking wouldn't allow me to do it. I contacted FNB and was told that due to FICA rules they required a copy of my SA ID Book and a Electricity bill to prove my address in SA handed in at the branch in Boksburg.. Now therein lies my problem. After repeated emails to FNB for clarification on this subject I am still without an answer to my question. Surely there must be other people in this same situation having worked in SA, earned and saved for their pension, and are now resident in the UK. How do they get their pension money.? Even if I go to SA and show my passport will that be sufficient to be able to withdraw my money from FNB and then let it accumulate for however long then return and do another withdrawal each and every time I want my money. Or must I just leave it there until the government there decide that all monies untouched in banks for a certain period of time become their or the banks property. Can anyone in a similar position advise me of a way round this situation so I can access my account and transfer money again.

Resolved Question: South Africans, are you
that you won't be able to sleep with your windows or doors open??? Gosh, I just read of this elderly woman that was brutally murdered in Boksburg. Breaks my heart, said her face was smashed and all. Disgusting, and please don't give me the usual, ' oh, crime is everywhere', I know that. We own homes in 3 other parts of the world and I can tell you, so far, it's still safe, I am concerned about SA though, especially having been a victim of crime down there. Are you worried? I am S. African by the way.
